I think that recycling bins should be placed on each floor within every building for use of the students.

Anonymous said...

As soon as additional resources both human and financial become available this will take place.

Renting textbooks instead of buying them! When new editions come out, most books simply have a different cover and very minute differences in the text. If students cannot sell back their books, they usually wind up in the garbage. Like elementary schools, students should pay a tiny bit extra in their tuition for this service. Saves a ton on the materials for all those books to be made!! Luckily some are made from recycled paper, but there are other resources used in places such as the bindings which aren't renewable.

Fat chance of this ever happening, but what a great thought...

The inability to control temperature conditions in many buildings on the West campus troubles me. I have experienced uncontrollable heating conditions in the Science building and Hunt hall. These conditions were present in 2003 and in 2007 (after improvements to the underground piping system). The remedy, to the overheating of the room, is opening a window or turning on an air conditioner (in the winter). Johnson controls has retrofitted many thermostats on the steam radiators all over west campus, many thermostats seems to work. With oil prices rising, emissions effect air quality, and students being uncomfortable in an expensive educational environment what can BSC due to address the heat loss situation? http://www.bridgew.edu/FMP/Energy%20Project%20Brochure.pdf

How about double sided printing? On modern printers, it's simple to install a device that will let you print on both sides, and for printers that see heavy use it's probably even cost effective! I hear some departments have copy machines that won't make double sided copies, which seems wasteful and short-sighted.

Also, those of us with good eyesight can print rough drafts two pages per sheet (click the Properties button on the confirm printing window), which saves as much paper as printing double sided.

Anonymous said...

Do not throw away textbooks. Sell textbooks to Scholars (book store @ the rotary), or sell them on Amazon. Double sided printing is an excellent conservation idea. Vermont Law School in South Royalton, Vermont uses doubled sided printing. Conserving heat is important too.

Anonymous said...

If there were a forum on this site that students could post books they cannot sell back to Scholars or the BSC store that would facilitate a more precise exchange. the beginnings of the semesters are when those bookstores will buy your books; a forum would not have this limitation.

And I agree, the Buildings are too hot!

What about the Light Bulb Exchanges?

Anonymous said...

what are the light bulb exchanges?

Anonymous said...

Those events on campus were you can bring your outdated neanderthal incandescent light bulbs and exchange them for the new cleaner and meaner compact florescent light(CFL) bulbs.

Not much to blog about in the topic of sustainability? Does anyone check this frequently and not post?
So far we have covered recycling (seems to be everyone’s favorite), and some energy management topics. Hull, MA is considering installing four wind turbines about one mile off the shore of Nantasket Beach. This mini-wind farm, in conjunction with two other land based wind turbines, would supply Hull with an estimated 15 Megawatts (Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth can produce 688MW) these six wind turbines would provide power to the 11,050 residents of Hull (Bridgewater has 25,185 residents). Unlike the large scale wind farm scheduled for Nantucket Sound which sustains the countries best winds, the Hull wind endeavourer has receive little opposition.
Many schools such as: Newton South High School, Carlton Elementary School in Salem, Woodburn High School, North Quincy High School, Murphy School in Dorchester, Tufts University, and Capuano Elementary in Somerville all have PV solar systems (those are only a few). Some systems are small and others big. My guess is solar applications are more prevalent because they require less maintenance. Windmills provide more power and take up less space, but the moving parts require maintenance. Windless cloudy days can cause problems, but for the most part PV and wind turbines are reliable. Is there a possibility a school like Bridgewater State College would invest in a renewable energy application? Were renewable applications considered when constructing the new Crimson Hall dormitories?
The price range depends on the power desired. The Brockton, MA Brightfield (PV site) cost 3.037 million and has 1,395 SCHOTT Solar ASE 300 modules that provide 425-kilowatt powering about 71 homes.
Would BSC consider something renewable? The 11 million dollar energy conservation State grant could have bought a renewable electricity system to power the school. I understand increased personal costs to manage and maintain systems would be a permanent burden, electricity per kilowatt hour would be more expensive in the breakdown of costs, and there is even more I don’t understand. If the school could be powered with clean energy then it would be impossible to not be environmentally responsible.

Place recycling bins in target areas where more fluids are consumed, such as rooms in the tinsley center, RCC026B, etc. Oh, and slap students that commute to school in trucks/SUV's!

Kick the bottled water habit! The Center for the New American Dream has launched a pre-summer campaign. For thousands of years, humans have been hydrated without plastic bottles. Wrapping our water in petroleum is really wasteful. When I lived in Arizona, I got in the habit -- common there at the time -- of carrying a water bottle on my belt and refilling it throughout the day. See the CNAD site at http://www.newdream.org/consumer/water.php.

On campus, we can order pitchers of water, rather than bottles, for catered events. We can bring our own cups!

I think controling the buildings heat and cooling systems should be regulated better. Not only is it a money saver but saving energy also helps the global warming issue. Spending the money now on having someone come in to replace old non-functioning thermostats would be in the best interest of the school's budget as well as conserving energy. I think it is funny how the BSC puts up posters in the hallways saying "Save Energy, turn off lights" when the heat is blasting and the windows are wide open. It just doesn't make any sense.

Anonymous said...

I the past couple of months I have become much more aware of the environmental problems we are facing today. I have also learned about what BSC is doing to try to become more environmentally friendly. The problem I have is the lack of concern students have regarding the environmental issues. People who I have talked to feel that it is not their problem and refuse to make any small changes in their lives which could help the environment. Any small thing helps, like shutting the water off when you are brushing your teeth or shutting the lights off when you leave the room. These things are not hard but if everyone does them it will make a big difference. It is our responsibility to take care of the environment and we have not been doing a very good job.

The following should prove how much an individual effort can add up to save, curtosy of "Delta Sky Magazine - Green Numbers" and "The Power of 1" article. (link: http://www.delta-sky.com/2008_03/greennumbers/)

1. If the thermostats in every house in America were lowered 1 degree Fahrenheit during the winter, the nation would save 230 million barrels of crude oil—enough to fill an oil tanker 400 times. (That’s the amount of oil being imported into the United States from Iraq each year.)

2. One gallon of used oil—the amount from a small car engine—can pollute 1 million gallons of fresh water and create an 8-acre oil slick. (Each year, nearly 200 million gallons of used oil are illegally dumped on the ground, tossed in the trash or poured down storm sewers and drains.)

3. If Delta’s 40 million SkyMiles members were to spend 1 minute less each day in the shower over their lifetimes, they would save 4 trillion gallons of water—the total amount of snow and rain that falls over the entire lower 48 United States in a day.

4. One old cell phone recycled by each cell phone user in America would reclaim enough precious metals to create 631 solid gold replicas of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen’s funerary mask.

5. One hour of using a gas-operated leaf blower produces the same amount of greenhouse gases as a car driving 4,400 miles—that’s a round trip from Salt Lake City to New York City.

6. If every American switched to receiving just one bill as an electronic statement instead of a paper one, the one-time savings would be 217,800,000 sheets—enough to completely blanket the island of Key West in a single layer of paper

7. If metro Atlantans who normally drove to work would telecommute just one day a year instead, they would save more than $50 million in gas—enough to buy an EnergyStar compact fluorescent bulb for the desk lamps of every college student in the United States.

8. If every newspaper reader in the United States recycled just one typical Sunday paper, he or she could help create 212 million pounds of cellulose insulation—enough to insulate 118,767 Habitat for Humanity houses. That’s nearly twice as many houses as all the Habitat homes built in America so far.

9. If homebuilders installed one dual-flush toilet instead of a standard low-flow toilet in every new house built in 2008, they would save 1.65 billion gallons of water a year.

10. If 1 quart of leftover paint was recycled from every renovation project in America this year (10 percent of all the house paint purchased in the United States is typically thrown out), it would reclaim 2.5 million gallons—enough to paint the outside of the White House every year for the next 43 centuries, or to paint San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge 250 times.

11. One soft drink can recycled by each elementary school student in America would save 24.8 million cans. That would be enough aluminum to create 21 Boeing 737 airplanes.

12. One out of every 3 pounds of the waste that Americans generate is just for packaging, which each year adds up to 77 million tons—enough to fill the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans 37 times.

13. If every American collected 1 gallon of water once a week while waiting for the shower or bathwater to get hot (use it to water your houseplants!), the total saved would be 15.8 billion gallons of water a year—enough to fill the Reflecting Pool at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., 2,338 times.

14. If every American household turned off the lights for one hour at 8 p.m. local time on March 29 during the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour 2008 (www.earthhour.org), they would prevent more than 16,610 tons of carbon dioxide from being released—enough to fill every hot-air balloon at the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta seven times.

15. If just one passenger per each flight in the world this year packed 1 pound less of luggage, they would save enough fuel to fly a Boeing 737 around the world 474 times.

16. If Iowans purchased 1 percent more locally grown produce instead of fruits and vegetables shipped in from out of state, they could save enough fuel to drive a Toyota Prius back and forth from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine, 211 times (visiting Iowa 422 times).

17. If one 20-mile trip per week was cut out (by combining errands) for every registered vehicle in the United States, 145 million fewer tons of greenhouse gases would be released into the air each year. That’s equal to the annual carbon dioxide emissions from 36 coal-fired power plants.

18. Replacing just one 500-sheet roll of virgin toilet paper a year with one 500-sheet roll of 100 percent recycled paper in every American household would leave 424,000 trees standing—16 times as many trees as in New York City’s Central Park.

19. One dimmer switch replacing a regular on/off switch in every U.S. house would save the electricity necessary to light 1.2 million homes—that’s every home in the state of Arkansas.

These statistics show a sort of shocking realization of how much there is to save. Once again, these statistics are curtosey of "Delta Sky Magazine - Green Numbers" and "The Power of 1" article. (link: http://www.delta-sky.com/2008_03/greennumbers/)

I think sustainability is great, I just feel that not many people are aware of it. Their are tons of different out comes if people just shut off the water while they brush their teeth, or turn of the lights.

Anonymous said...

I think that the school should set up some sort of program where students can post what textbooks they have and what textbooks they are looking for. Then students can exchange and trade their books instead of buying brand new ones. It could help with saving money and paper instead of just throwing out the old editions of the books

I think that a system should be put in place in the BSC dorms to try to minimize water consumption. To my knoweledge not much has been done to makes tudents more aware of how much water they use. From simple signs to maybe some type of reward system.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the idea of water conservation. The college should look at installing waterless urinals and dual flush toilets as a way to save thousands of gallons of water a year, and labor and maintenance costs are cheaper than 2.5gal, and 1gal flush valves. I've installed waterless urinals for several years all over the state with no complaints.

Apply Renewable Energy such as wind and solar to power the college, Enact Energy effecient policies as a campus, as well as offer Green technoligical and business degrees to help us leed into the next energy revolution.

This is where the future is headed, why not prepare in the best way possible by applying ourselves and really preparing our students for tomorrows workplace.

This would mean " To minister" at it's highest level.

what about somehow rigging the treadmills/ rowing machines/ any machine in the gym to an energy source? So when people use them, we can use their energy to power the gym? Just a thought...

I am utilizing the net as the only way to acheive this. I saw a really amazing website which explains how to build solar panels and so on. The website explains all the steps needed for solar panel construction.

I'm not really sure bout how precise the info given there iz. If some guys over here who have experience with these works can have a peak and give your feedback in the thread it would be great and I'd really appreciate it, because I really lav solar panel construction.
